Shalom beloveds
Let’s talk about hair for a sec. Each of us has a different type, curl pattern, texture, colour and style of hair. But oh man, can social media do a number on you when you’re scrolling down your feed and you see all these lovely manes- something out of a magazine. But that’s not real life. All those beautiful blowouts were done by professionals, who cost lots of money and the people with the blowouts had to wake up super early to get it done for the day. Still wish you had their hair?
I’m a curl type 2B and I have been on my CGM (curly girl method) journey for just a little over 2 years now. I’m amazed at how my curls have morphed and bloomed. One day it’s a mess of beautiful untamed curls and other days it’s just… a mess! One thing I do regret though is recently cutting my hair into a hairstyle that requires constant blowouts and straightening. Meh! Those weeks of blowouts have caused my curl pattern to lose its curl memory. Leaving it a little stringy and not quite wavy. So I am now having to restart in regaining that curl pattern, by ceasing all heat on my hair and allowing my hair’s curl memory to return. It’ll take a bit of time but thankfully not as long as 2 years. The one thing I’m overjoyed about is how I started to find my own ‘hair identity’ in allowing my hair to be free in its own natural state. Some days were tough and I would fall out of love with my hair, only to fall back in love with it again on ‘wash day’. The other thing I’m happy about is that ALL my old dyed hair has finally grown out and have been cut off. After years of dying my hair with either black permanent dye or other black dyes I allowed it all to grow out and trimmed it as I went along, now all my natural (medium to light brown) hair is visible. The other nice thing is that I save so much money on hair products now. When I started using hair products that are safe for my hair and my waves, I started only needing to wash my hair 1-2 times a week (which is actually what we’re supposed to do). My scalp also loves this because it’s no longer dry and itchy, but moisturized and it feels so good!
Over the years there’s been this stigma attached to my hair: some bad, some good. When people see me they see my hair first and have all sorts of comments directed at me. Most urge me not to cut my hair like it’s some kind of god to worship. Others used to envy it and accuse me of acting better than them because of it. My hair has been both a curse and a blessing as I grew up. I’ve finally learned to invest in what’s best for my hair (and my body). Because lets be honest, people will always have something to say about your hair and well, about everything and anything. But just push through and be your true authentic God ordained self: beautiful and one of a kind. We are made in His image- mind, body, soul. Unique in every way! So I would encourage anyone to go natural, it’s such a fulfilling and rewarding (hair) journey and the best part is that you don’t look like another clone in this world of perfect Instagram hair. Be true and be you boo boo! It’s what sets you apart.
Ps. If you would like to know some tips, tricks, advice and go-to’s on how to win at wearing and maintaining your natural hair, drop me a comment below and I’ll share all the CGM hair wisdom that’s been imparted onto me. I got you! 😉
